It’s one of the places where you can feel the ocean’s influence even way up inland. What originally brought me to The Gorge was adventuring – a friend was whitewater raft guiding and invited me to tag along on a trip. I was instantly hooked both on whitewater and The Gorge. - Waterfalls: Multnomah Falls is the most famous, but don’t miss hidden gems like Wahclella Falls and Panther Creek Falls.

White Salmon: White Water Rafting Capital
If you’re craving excitement, White Salmon is the place to be. Just across the river from Hood River, this small Washington town is famous for its world-class white water rafting. The White Salmon River offers thrilling rapids with plenty of outfitters ready to guide your adventure, I highly recommend booking the full day trip on the White Salmon River with River Drifters for an unforgettable adventure.
After a day on the water, take time to explore downtown White Salmon. The town has a relaxed vibe, with local breweries, cozy cafes, and stunning views of Mount Hood across the Columbia River.

Hood River: Wind Sports, Snow Sports and More
Hood River, Oregon, is often called the windsurfing capital of the world. Thanks to steady winds that funnel through the Colombia River Gorge, it’s a hotspot for windsurfing, kiteboarding, and sailing. Even if you’re not into water sports, watching dozens of brightly colored kites dance above the river is an unforgettable experience.
When winter arrives, the focus shifts from the river to the slopes of nearby Mt. Hood. Just a short drive away, you’ll find ski areas like Mount Hood Meadows, Timberline Lodge, Mt. Hood Skibowl, and Cooper Spur—offering everything from big terrain and night skiing to tubing hills and beginner-friendly runs. It makes Hood River the perfect year-round adventure base.
Beyond the water and the mountains, Hood River is also known for its wineries, breweries, and fruit orchards. Don’t miss the Hood River Fruit Loop, a scenic drive that takes you past orchards, farm stands, and tasting rooms.

- Thunder Island Brewing Co. (Cascade Locks) – Gorge-themed community brewery and pub with patio seating and Gorge views—great for casual bites and local brews.
- Multnomah Falls Lodge Restaurant – Dine inside the historic lodge overlooking the iconic Multnomah Falls—reservations encouraged but not required.
